Saurian DevLog #20 – Invasion of the Small-ish Critters

Chris L.
The biggest thing I’ve done recently is finish the Axestemys (though I like to refer to him as Mr. Floppy Turtle when it gets late). It took a bit longer than usual, but I really wanted to run it through Substance Painter to learn the ins and outs of this program. The other main thing I’ve been working on is a bit more subtle, it involves… you guessed it: trees. As we fill in the world, we notice ecological niches start to stand out as needing more content. In this case, we have plenty of medium and super-tall trees, but we needed more saplings of those trees, young’uns around 6ft high or so. Small enough that they needed new branches to be made since adult branches on a tiny tree would just look ridiculous.

Exploring the animation frontier has been a strange mix of both fulfilling and arduous. Significant progress has been made but unfortunately nothing is ready to be shown yet. To keep myself productive I’ve been doing some presentation related art for the pre-release which I’m sure will reveal itself at some point down the line. The majority of my work for the first release is done, so most of my time when not animating is used putting the finishing touches on art assets and making sure everything looks just right. While you wait for something more meaningful have a fancy render of the Thescelosaurus.

In addition to this, I’ve given Chris Masna the rundown on Substance Painter so he can get to work texturing some of my other finished models. He has taken to it very quickly and you can see some of his handywork on the Champsosaurus below. So with these two plus Chris Lomaka’s Axestemys, we’ve got a nice little trio of animals very important to the gameplay of Dakotaraptor all ready to be rigged and animated.

You know the drill by now, we’re mostly ironing out remaining bugs and preparing the pre-release. We did take a break from this temporarily to bring you Steam integration! To those wondering how we managed to get into Steam without going through Greenlight… don’t worry about it.

While we were there, we decided to work a little bit on an Achievement system, so all of you that are into that have something to look forward to. We promise to keep the inside jokes in the achievements to a minimum.

This game is a wonderful idea, and I’m looking forward to play it 🙂 It’s a childhood dream come true. I was just wondering; will there be giant dragon-flies?

    • Joshua Lowrie on June 23, 2017

Meganisoptera were not alive in the Mesozoic, so the answer is no.

  • Laind004 on May 24, 2017

Amazed by every single recreation of the plants!

  • Altair on May 20, 2017

I think this video shows a very interesting family behavior among turkeys (but common to most non-flying birds) that might be of inspiration while programming the AI.

  • horrible demon thing on May 19, 2017

Is it possible that if a dinosaur sustains a bad injury, the skin will scar up around it and leave gash marks in the animal? it would be very hard to program. Also, will an animal be able to die of blood loss, shock, or just plain broken bones from falling out of a tree? sorry if this is a lot, I am just very curious.

  • Max on May 18, 2017

The hype is real!!!!! This Game is going to be amazing!

  • NublarRex on May 18, 2017

Does Saurian have a discord? If not you should consider making one.

  • marscreature on May 17, 2017

Super excited to see it’s on Steam (even though I search for it each week with no results).
I’ve been watching the progress ever since pre-Kickstarter. It was really smart building support before doing a Kickstarter.

  • Andrew on May 17, 2017

I can’t wait!!! I can’t tell you how disappointed with how The Isle is going! I have one important question though that only you guys can answer. Will there be a first person Point of View along with the 3rd Person Point of View?

  • david on May 16, 2017

Whats the little red blue and green meeter on the bottom right of the screen

  • Kadin Render on May 16, 2017

This looks great! one thing though… I don’t know if my computer is going to be able to handle this kind of graphics. For instance, I downloaded the Archotek Project, which has really simple graphics, but my computer lagged like crazy in the forest maps, so… yeah.

  • slimeywoodchip on May 14, 2017

imagine being devoured by that turtle as a baby dinosaur 0_o

  • SirWaffles on May 14, 2017

Ohhhhhhh, the hype train powers on.

  • slimeywoodchip on May 13, 2017

I’ve just realized it’s been like 40 weeks since the first devlog. Time flies lol 😀

  • DDP on May 13, 2017

Is champsosaurus a crocodile or lizard?

    • Tiago Asafe on May 15, 2017

Champsosaurus is a choristodere, this isn’tudo easy to relacionate and comprehend.

    • JJ Giesey on May 15, 2017

From what I heard, neither, it’s apart of a diapsid reptile group called choristidera.

    • paleosir on May 24, 2017

Neither, it’s part of an extinct branch of reptiles called choristoderes.

  • david on May 12, 2017

I love jokes and easter eggs skyrim is a game that is known for them and when i get really excited about them like that halarious star wars easter egg. I think saurian should be riddled with them.

  • Peckz on May 12, 2017

Hey, but one question. Will we need Nvidia graphics cards to be able to see the Tesselosaurus? heheh

    Very nice artwork!

  • Turtledragon on May 12, 2017

The models for this game are so detailed and pretty, I am always excited when we get to see a new one. But when am I NOT excited about Saurian, right? 😀 Keep up the great work! ^^

  • Patricia on May 12, 2017

Those renders are stunning! Truly beautiful works of art, and so lifelike! I’m growing a particular fondness for that turtle 😊

I love watching your progress, keep up the great work!

  • Dboy on May 12, 2017

All coming together! Got to give credit and appreciation where it’s due. As everything gets finalised I hope one thing is taken into account that hasn’t really got discussed, that is dinosaur population density.
There is nothing worse in games with everything being impressive but in excessive quantities and too much of it which removes the novelty and specialness. For example farcry primal, walking into an animal literally every few meters soon got exhausting (hence their patch update) I’d imagine.
It would be a shame to have scientifically accurate and realistic dinosaurs and environments but an inaccurate, excessive amount of them. I trust your passion for being as accurate as possible will remain the same with this aspect. Great work guys!

  • Eric on May 12, 2017

I’m so glad I backed this game! Every update brings more and more hype. Can’t wait to play!!

  • Hunter1324 on May 12, 2017

I’ve been wondering about something… How terrestrial was Champsosaurus? I have seen quite a lot of very contradictory information about it.

  • KieranT on May 12, 2017

Onng, so close I can’t wait, great work guys, the hype is real!!

  • Steamoraptor on May 12, 2017

I would really, really appreciate it very much if there would be a non-Steam release, something independent from fat man-in-the-middle companies with data harvesting all over the place, and requirements for being online and such. I really would.
I want to play Saurian, not hunt after irrelevant and infantile “achievements”.

    • Darkfrost1802 on May 15, 2017

Steam has no requirement for games being online(OFFLINE MODE) and why would you need to go for the achievements? I play many games and I have never gone after achievements, and in what way are they infantile???

  • Henry Ford on May 12, 2017

For a few years I worked on simulations ( in Simula) of plant growth patterns and would like to know if you are using L-systems as the underlying architecture for the “drawings” ( I use the term carefully 🙂 ) of plants or whether you are using a proper simulation.

and I am looking forward to wasting hour of my retirement on this programme…………….

  • Luke on May 12, 2017

Awesome turtle! Mine loves to bury himself in soft sand under water. Keep in mind these guys (nowadays, anyway) are surprisingly quick on land, too!

  • Grilda on May 12, 2017

oh god.. I can’t wait to finally play, so happy I backed this project.. much love from czech republic!

  • Blue on May 12, 2017

    Happy 20th post!!!

  • Wylie on May 12, 2017

    The hype is REAL!

  • NinjaGamer173 on May 12, 2017

ooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh mah god I want this game xD All aboard the hype train!

    • NublarRex on May 12, 2017

      CHOO CHOO!

  • Me on May 11, 2017

Cool, question though. First off will the trees have a smooth transition or will they jump from being tiny to huge? Second will tiny saplings be destructible (Basically if you walk into them will they like fall or at least have some sort of reaction) or will it just be awkward and completely solid?

  • Garrus on May 11, 2017

Keeping the inside jokes to a minimum? We all know that’s a bold-faced lie Jake. 😛

    • david on May 12, 2017

      Hold on to your butts

  • AngryBusdriver on May 11, 2017

    Achievment Unlocked!

    Tyrannosaur Snack!

    • NinjaGamer173 on May 13, 2017

      lol my first achievment

    • marscreature on May 17, 2017

I had that on The Isle, “OH a Trex!” ran over to check it out then realized too late I needed to be running away instead. Definitely going to have that in this game too…

  • Charlie Boyle on May 11, 2017

I can’t wait for this game… it’s going to be amazing! Love the renders, keep up the good work friends!

  • Carissa on May 11, 2017

I love getting these updates, you guys are doing awesome work and I can’t wait to see the first release!
