IMPORTANT: Saurian release delay (DevLog #16)

Saurian fans,

Lets get the bad news out of the way first: we are now estimating Saurian’s release will be in Q2 of 2017 (before July). This applies to both pre-release and early access, but we assure you we are still working hard to get these out to you as soon as we can.

We understand that many will be disappointed to hear this, so we think it is fair to give everyone our reasons for delaying the release of Saurian. The primary cause is that some of the key systems of the game we promised for early access will not be ready by the end of this month, most noticeably the ontogeny system (this allows for the player to grow from hatchling to adult) and the sound system (integration of music, sound effects, etc. into the game). We would not feel comfortable releasing to the public without these in place.

Aside from these, some other items are in need of completion and polish time in order to release a worthwhile product. These include the following:
– Optimisation: We would like Saurian to be as widely available as we possibly can. The fact that we are aiming to have a foliage-dense environment populated by numerable AI entities poses a lot of optimisation problems. This will take some work to get running smoothly on as many machines as possible.
– Balancing: Making this game fun is in our absolute top priorities. We are very happy with how Saurian’s gameplay is emerging, but at the same time we want to make the best possible first-showing of the game. We feel we can better balance gameplay as well as player features (combat/Raptor Prey Restraint, climbing, and general control feel) and the AI (regarding balancing behaviours; when they should run, fight, eat, drink, rest, etc) given some more crucial development time before releasing the game.
– Bugs: Thanks to our super sleuth QA team, we’ve found our fair share of bugs. This is laughably normal in the development of any game, but if we can help it we want our players to have a largely bug- and glitch-free experience when playing Saurian. So, we want to also devote this extended time before the release of the game to hopefully limit the bugs in the game to only the ones you hear in the forest ambience.

Based on these reasons, we hope that we are able to broach some understanding as to our choice to push back the release of Saurian. We will continue to update you guys via our bi-weekly devlogs, as we have since the end of our Kickstarter. We are extremely appreciative of the community that has grown around this passion project of ours; we simply could not ask for a better community.

So this announcement is not entirely a downer, we have something special. We’ve taken some footage of us playing with the AI scene and providing some commentary on the game and its development. Hope you enjoy:

And now on with the regular devlog:

Erin
Over the past two weeks, I’ve continued to refine the composition of the foliage for Saurian’s environment. So, today I’d like to showcase the six major biomes present in Saurian’s Hell Creek. These biomes in the gif below are are: redwood forest, fern prairie, broadleaf forest, upland forest, beach and cypress swamp. Working along with Tom, we’ve been slowly but surely perfecting these biomes based on the fossil record and with inspiration from similar places in the world today.

Chris L.
I’ve been working a lot on the LODs for our foliage. It’s not particularly exciting (who wants to see LODs), but people might like to know that we’re still working to make sure this title doesn’t have monster requirements. You should be able to run it on a… wait for it… DINOSAUR of a computer! Oh, and I’m working on one of the most dopey turtles ever – Axestemys. It’s large enough to eat you if you’re a hatchling, so try not to make any ‘Jar-Jar of Hell Creek’ jokes out loud when you’re near it.

when its released will the price go up at all? or keep its 19.99 price? =]

  • Henning on April 2, 2017

Hi! The biomes looks beautiful 🙂 I was just wondering; will there be any insects flying around in Saurian? And will there be seed-capsules blowing about in sertain seasons? …Will there be crustacions snd musks? 🙂

  • Chelsea on March 31, 2017

Will the AIs have courtship behaviour? I think it would be sweet to see them not only fighting but loving 🙂

  • PhoenixKev on March 22, 2017

Hey no worried, i’ve waited long for this game and waiting a few more months won’t hurt me 🙂 i’d rather have a great, smooth game than a glitchy one.

  • Spartan316 on March 21, 2017

I say take your time. I would love a well-polished game that takes longer to come out than one that isn’t finished…

  • Blue on March 20, 2017

you guys take all the time you need because I would rather wait a million years for a pebble to turn into a diamond.

  • david on March 19, 2017

Why is everyones profile picture like some kinda alien? I like my turtles

    • slimeywoodchip on March 26, 2017

“he gentlesaur doesn’t choose the alien, the alien chooses the gentlesaur..”

  • Mick Popowcer on March 18, 2017

No prob on the game…worth waiting for if it’s done right. How about the book?

  • CCdarkslayer on March 18, 2017

Honestly take your time. The least the we want is a game that’s rushed to make fans happy. NO RUSHING!

    • slimeywoodchip on March 18, 2017

      well said sir

  • Freydog on March 17, 2017

Sure, it may be a little disappointing this delay has happened but personally I would rather wait another 1-4 months for a great smooth running game than get it now and have to deal with flying meat and teleporting T-rex!
Also this game is turning amazing and the effort and soul put into this is just outstanding!
And don’t you dare feel sorry for the delay! Any true supporters would be able to understand and know just how much time and effort you guys are putting into this game!
Keep up the incredible work! Can’t wait to play!

  • Buzz on March 17, 2017

lol “all major theme parks have delays” yes they do XD and you guys will be the greatest yet!!! keep up the great work you guys are making major leaps in dinosaur game history!!! no game will ever compare to yours!!!

    • david on March 29, 2017

But when the pyrates of the caribian breaks down the pyrates dont eat the tourists

  • Matthew on March 17, 2017

I’m completely fine with waiting. As long as the finished product is amazing, I’m fine with waiting as long as needed. Better that everything is ironed out now rather than release too early and find out there are still problems.

  • paleosir on March 17, 2017

This game is well worth the wait! Keep it up!

  • Marcel on March 17, 2017

Until now, every KS project Needs more time. But in most cases it turned out, it was worth the extra waiting time.
That would not be different with Saurian.
Take the time you need, to polish saurian to it’s fullest.

  • NublarRex on March 17, 2017

I have a quest about the ontogeny system. I am aware that Dakotaraptors likely did not raise their offspring, but Trikes and Rexes likely did my question it: As a young trike or Rex will you have to follow your parents around until you’re old enough to find food for yourself or are you on your own once you hatch out of that egg.

    • Blue on March 20, 2017

rex’s took care of their babies until they were one and trikes took are of their hatchings until they were fully grown (male) until they them selves died (female).

      • david on March 29, 2017

I actually believe that tyrannosaurus took care of there offspring even longer than that

  • AntFuze on March 17, 2017

Can’t wait for this game. It looks amazing & you can see all the fantastic work you guys have put into it. I will gladly wait a few extra months for you guys to better what you already have. So proud to see a game this good come from someone other than a big game company.

  • Aleq F. Reese on March 17, 2017

Is there any chance of a hard copy or digital download pass for this game? The museum and gift shop I represent would very much like to market and sell your amazing product! I have been missionary-info your project for a few years now to as many customers as I get eager to learn about proper dinosaurs.

    • Hootor on March 17, 2017

I strongly support the claim. Also since it is very bad to have Steam in as middle-man cash machine (for them, not for you) and data farming point. Would be excellent if we could avoid them.

  • Kirara on March 17, 2017

yo I waited 8 years for Last Guardian, I seriously don’t gaf about this delay lmao just as long as you guys make a great game, I’ll wait 3 months I’ll wait 10 years whatever. Its clear you guys are pouring your heart and souls into this game because these devlogs blow my mind every time

    • Cilone on March 18, 2017

Right? I’d rather have to wait longer and get a better game rather than get some rushed hunk of crap like a lot of game companies have been doing lately. As long as you keep these devlogs coming I can wait.

  • DjCrazy on March 17, 2017

Don’t worried we can wait a long time for the game release so you guys take your time

  • Jed on March 17, 2017

We’ve been waiting 65 million years for this game. Take a few extra months.

    • Aster on March 17, 2017

      ^^^

  • Hailey Wolff on March 17, 2017

No worries about the delay guys, these things happen and besides, the game looks friggin awesome! And I personally don’t mind waiting longer for better performance in a game, so all I have to say about this is that you’re all doing a super incredible job, and keep it up!!! 😀 Love you guys! <3

  • Calbin V on March 17, 2017

Don’t worry about it. Just as long as it gets out, I don’t care.

  • Jesse on March 16, 2017

No worries guys! I’m stoked to play the game but would rather you take your time and make it fun, easy to run and playable rather than having a million bug fixes later. I’ve got tons of games to play in the meantime while I wait for the amazing final product!

  • Travis on March 16, 2017

No problems about the extra time. If release is too early, I may be eaten before I am hatched. Game gremlin could show up as a nasty nest raiding mammal!!

    • August on March 17, 2017

      Please don’t end Saurian. Please!!!!!!!!

      • HMS Victory on March 18, 2017

I can reassure you that they won’t my friend. They have made it so close to their goal. Throwing it out would be incredibly wasteful…

  • IronSpider991 on March 16, 2017

I bet this is a April fools joke and they are releasing it on the 1st of April. Now that would be funny. But if not I can completely understand why you need to wait before you can release Saurian to us.

    • DinoDash on March 16, 2017

Hmm… I guess it’s possible, would explain the video. I would be overjoyed if it was though.

    • Garrus on March 18, 2017

Garrus here, community moderator and QA Tester. I assure you, this is not an April Fool’s joke. We are being completely upfront and honest here.

      • DinoDash on March 18, 2017

In that case I’ve followed numerous indie games and know that delays are to be expected. So no worries!

      • IronSpider991 on March 19, 2017

Okey I’ll trust you on this. Hope the game is good on release.

    • david on March 29, 2017

      Its not even april yet

  • HexFox on March 16, 2017

Take as much time as you need! We understand you want to make something amazing, and that takes time! Please don’t stress! ( ´∀`) Saurian is looking so amazing so far, and I (along with many others I’m sure) are looking forward to being able to play it! (*^▽^*)

  • Keegan on March 16, 2017

Keep up the awesome work! Delays happen but your true supporters totally understand these things happen and we all just can’t wait to see the final project!

  • Steve on March 16, 2017

It should only be ready when its ready, and no earlier. Delay no problem. Its coming along great so far it seems. The updates are great to read and you guys are doing well.

  • slimeywoodchip on March 16, 2017

ahh, saurian developers. Always making the greatest of jokes.. 10/10 would jar jar again

  • Kit Leighton on March 16, 2017

No worries here on the delay. As stated by another commenter even AAA games have delays, so do major films, etc. Would rather get the best version of the product than the fastest! Yall are doing great work, keep it up!

  • slimeywoodchip on March 16, 2017

even though I’m obviously a little depressed.. IT’S OKAY ^_^! It’s important that you guys have a super duper pre release, and not something unfinished.. *sheds a tear*

  • Charles Bruce on March 16, 2017

I’m sad to hear about the delay, but it’s perfectly understandable. I’m just happy that y’all are taking your time to make Saurian the perfect prehistoric game for us!

  • Santannah on March 16, 2017

It will be worth the wait!! <3 Thanks so much for all your hard work! 😀

  • Annelise McSherry on March 16, 2017

I understand! Im really glad you guys are really taking the time to get the pre release as bug free as possible, it shows how dedicated you are to your project! Everything is looking fantastic, will look forward to Q2!

  • david on March 16, 2017

Your doing such a neat job. But im sad i have to wait so long om so sad. I really like feathery dinosaurs i also like unique dinosaurs. Like a pure black decodarapter or a big perple tyrannosaurus. Scientifically accurate barney loves the way you taste but he has to wait untill summer. Will we actually be able to play as a pachycephalosaurus with harry potters glasses if so im not mad id actually think thats pretty funny. Id love tosee all kinds of halarious easter eggs but not so much it ruins the game

  • CrazyLogic on March 16, 2017

Hey don’t worry about it guys. Even major AAA games get delayed until they’re ready. Better to release something let with what you promised than to release it too early and unplayable.

Still can’t wait to be a t.Rex though.

  • CrazyYanmega on March 16, 2017

The fact that you guys are taking the time to do this right proves that you have mettle. Stay the course!

  • Hunter1324 on March 16, 2017

I can completelly understand that, I was afraid that the game might hit Early Access too soon and that it might not get the development time it needed. I will still be looking forward to it though. The environment is looking amazing.
